02 — What the numbers show
Two things worth noticing
Ward 4 has not had a contested choice
The Ward 4 council seat was acclaimed in 2022. Acclamation is an ordinary and entirely legitimate outcome — it simply means that when nominations closed, one candidate had come forward. But it does mean no vote was held for this seat, and Ward 4 residents were not presented with a choice on the ballot.
Ward 3 and Ward 4 were both filled this way in 2022, as was the Wellington County council seat for Ward 4. Half of the township's ward seats went uncontested.
A few hundred votes decides a seat
Where there was a contest, the numbers were small. In Ward 1, Penny Renken was elected with 382 votes out of 836 cast — a margin of 93 over the second-place candidate.
At that scale, the people on a single road can change the outcome. This is the practical argument for returning your ballot: in township elections an individual vote carries weight it simply does not carry provincially or federally.

What changes in 2026
The 2026 election is run by mail. Every eligible voter is sent a ballot at the end of September and returns it by post or to the drop box in Kenilworth.
There is no polling station on election day, though the Township does run two in-person voting days beforehand — Mount Forest on October 10 and Arthur on October 17. Ballots must arrive by Monday, October 26, 2026, which is a received-by deadline rather than a postmark deadline. The full voting guide is here.
Serge Karwal is standing for the Ward 4 council seat in 2026.
