Why it matters
In 2022 nobody in Ward 4 got to vote for their councillor. One candidate came forward, so the seat was filled by acclamation and no ballots were cast.
Where there was a contest that year, the numbers were small. Ward 1 was won with 382 votes out of 836 cast — a margin of 93. At that scale the people on one concession road can change the outcome.

The job
Council approves the annual budget and sets the tax rate that pays for it. This is the single decision that touches every household and business in the township, and it determines what everything else on this list can afford.
Which roads get rebuilt and which get patched, which culverts and drains are replaced, how water and wastewater systems are maintained and expanded, and what happens to arenas, parks and community facilities — these are council decisions, made in public, at the council table.
A councillor is the way an individual resident reaches the township as an institution. When a drainage problem, a road hazard or a permit that has stalled cannot be resolved through the office, it is the ward councillor’s job to raise it formally, in public, and to come back to the resident with an answer.
Council votes on planning and zoning matters, and on the by-laws that govern day-to-day life in the township. These decisions determine what can be built, where, and on what terms — and they last far longer than the term of the council that makes them.
